Healthier than the fast food meals – and just as much fun!
My kids just love the kids’ meals from the drive-through burger places, but it’s not usually in my budget (money or waist-wise!). So, we’ve come up with our own home version! My kids have paper bags they’ve decorated with smiley faces, and we make french fry holders out of a 1/4 sheet of white paper stapled together at the sides. If they are taking their meal “to go” I wrap the burger in a paper towel just like the burger-place wrappers. The menu is turkey burgers, french fries (“fast food fries” from the frozen food section at the store), sliced apples in a bag, and of course lots of ketchup!
The first few times I made turkey burgers no one would eat them! But, here is a recipe that the whole family loves:
Favorite Turkey Burgers!
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 envelope onion soup mix
- 1 – 2 T steak sauce (to get the flavor you like best)
- whole wheat hamburger buns
- toppings (kids like lettuce and ketchup, sometime cheese – I like avocado or BBQ sauce)
Put the turkey, onion soup mix and steak sauce in a ziploc bag and smush it around until it’s all blended. Make patties (I make 6 per pound because my kids like them as big around as the bun and thin) and grill until fully cooked. Warm the buns in your toaster and top with a patty and your favorite toppings. Yum!
